"And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of
the LORD your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a
stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the
children of Israel: That this may be a sign among you, that when your children
ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones? Then
ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan
were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it passed over Jordan , the waters of Jordan
were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for
ever."
Joshua 4:5-7
Charles Francis Adams, son of President John Quincy Adams
and grandson of President John Adams, kept a diary. One day this busy political
leader entered this description: "Went fishing with my son today—a day
wasted." His son, Brooks Adams, also kept a diary, which is still in
existence. On that same day, Brooks Adams made this entry: "Went fishing
with my father—the most wonderful day of my life!"
God has given fathers a special responsibility to make a
meaningful investment of time in the lives of their children. This is His
pattern for continuing faith through the generations of a family. There need to
be memorials in our lives—signposts that we can point out to our children to
show them that the God they read about in the Bible is still active in our
world today. This does not happen accidentally or without the investment of
serious time.
Many believe it to be wise and proper to make financial
preparation for our children’s future, and it is. But far more important are
the spiritual investments we make through spending time with them talking about
the things God has done in our own lives.
Today's Rooted Principle:
Take time today to invest in things that matter for
eternity, and your day will not be wasted.
